Since the age of 4, I wanted to play for my country, and unlike so many other people, I actually achieved my North Star! Not once but 43 times. But it wasn't always a happy time, in fact the opposite. And the more I took time to speak and listen to those around me, I found there was great sadness, anxiety, fear and even shame amongst us.
Since those days I have been fascinated with human performance, trying to understand how to create happy and healthy players, which in turn leads to high performing ones.
I didn't want my past grief to go to waste, so I aimed to share how I transformed my situation for the better and how we, as coaches, can improve our practices. To make sure that those in the Scottish system not only survive but also Thrive!
My experiences through the game have shaped who I am, the people on the journey I have leaned on and learnt from and my hopes is that I can now pass on my learnings to those in need.
Since retiring from 12 years in the pro-game, I've been in education as a Director of Rugby and Sport whilst also being involved in the talent development world. It has included, shaping and writing curriculum's on wellbeing and biopsychosocial skills; designing and delivering elite athlete programmes; a mental health first aid instructor and facilitator; an ILM performance coach; a Neuro Linguistic Programming Master; A Mindfulness and Breathwork coach on top of the numerous sports coaching roles.
My hope is to not only impart the rugby knowledge I have but also to distil my learnings from high performance to ensure every child who comes through Totum has the best chance to succeed on and off the pitch.

Nick played professionally for The Border Reivers, Edinburgh Rugby, Biarritz Olympique and Wasps. Nick managed to play for his country 43 times including the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. On his way up, he represented Scotland at every level including the 7's squad on the World series and at the 2006 Common Wealth Games.
During his playing career Nick gained two qualifications, Applied Sports Science BSc (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh and an MBA from Edinburgh Business School.
After his sporting career, Nick began coaching in the independent sector and at Wasps academy. Nick then became a Director of Rugby at Uppingham School before taking over as Director of Sport and is now doing the same at Merchiston Castle School.
Nick continues to learn and grow and has since gained numerous badges and qualifications to better support those in his care.
